Welcome! This is going to be quite the journey, and like all journeys, this one starts with a single step. Our first step is to take inventory of bit of content on CSS-Tricks. Starting with this means that we won’t be forgetting or neglecting any particular area of the site as we start thinking about the new design, because we’ve just recently explored every little nook and cranny of the site. This will also give us a quick content reference if we need it and also act as kind of a checklist later on in making sure we’ve addressed everything, design-wise.
Taking inventory is also a great first step for content strategy work, which we’ll get to very early on in this design process. It will also help us attach goals to different things on the site.
Perhaps not the most exciting start, but a vital step.
No Video with supported format and MME type found :(
Suffering from the same error. I am using Firefox.
Working on it folks, likely will be fixed tomorrow. This affects Firefox only I think. (AND IT’S STUPID FIREFOX’S FAULT =)). For now, switch over to a webkit browser or directly download the file and watch locally.
Shoullld be fixed. Gonna bury this since it doesn’t matter anymore.
So excited to watch this whole series! Great job, Chris!
FIRST! lol
Well, nevermind, not first :( lol, but the Video is working fine for me. Normally that’s an issue with Firefox that happens when you are developing locally, it should be fine on the server level….hmm, not sure.
Fuck ya finally….Nice Job Chris!!!! Very happy so far.
Love it. Content Strategy is an all-to-important, but overlooked principle of design. Erin still helping you on this? Looking forward to catching up with her when she returns from England. Great isn’t she? :)
And… lesson 3 says you’re talking with Erin:)
Hey Chris,
How about a running time on the video list view, that would help know if the viewer has time to watch it or needs to watch in later. Thanks man, great job. Congrats on the launch.
Agreed. That was my first thought.
Thanks, Chris!
I’ll get that in there as soon as I can!
Just gonna bury this and put the issue on https://github.com/chriscoyier/CSS-Tricks-v10/issues/53
“No Video with supported format and MME type found” – ?
This blog has come a long way, good job chris:)
No video othe iPad.
I’m using Chrome on iPad.
;)
Excited to start watching these! Thanks for showing us how you do things ;) It is very helpful.
Not sure where to put this, but in the footer for version 10 of the site – when you mouse over “Article Archive” a line shoots right into your nose. It is both awesome and something you might think about changing.
I also wanted to mention how awesome this is. I’ve been in such a strange limbo where I know a little bit of this and a little bit of that, but never enough to really build out a great website.
I’m going to follow along with you step by step in redesigning my portfolio as well as a non-profit.
I can’t shove a template into WordPress for my portfolio and call myself a web designer!
Hey Chris, worked like a charm! Nice to see it rolling ;-)
Hey Chris, awesome to see the site live!!! There is a LOT of video to watch already…
However, me thinks however that using email addresses as usernames is a BAD move… ‘m sure people like mikethelegacy@……com doesn’t want the shame of his “first” #FAIL emblazed with his email address forever either… LOL.
FWIW, I tried changed my display name (WP edit profile) and it took 5+ minutes before that was reflected in the real-time comment preview. Trust it’ll fix it retroactively if people like mikethelegacy went in and changed it on their profiles… hint hint…
No Video with supported format and MME type found on firefox, chrome and ipad
New design looks awesome Chris!! I’ll get around to watching this tonight!
Looking forward to start digging into these videos! Nice work on the redesign, Chris. Thanks for all the work you’ve put into getting these videos going.
Unreal excitement to watch these videos. Thanks for all you do!
Totally agree. Starting now! Thanks for all your hard work, Mr. Coyier.
Hi Chris, maybe I just don’t get it but why is there no button to view the videos in fullscreen mode? Thanks a lot!
You guys did an awesome job, can’t wait to see all of it.
There is for me in Chrome and Firefox… e.g. http://cl.ly/JHDu
Gonna bury this just to keep things on topic about the content instead of technical issues.
For me the full screen mode button is only available when my viewport is stretched out wide. Viewing in a smaller window hides that icon.
Yup, I’m on Chrome w/ 13″ MBP no fullscreen icon for me either.
Well, that’s weird. There is a fullscreen button and even volume control when using the Chrome Canary, but not in the normal version. I’m going to see what I can do about updating or whatever..
But it’s there so everything works perfectly, thanks :)
Chris … I don’t see any video player – using latest firefox. I see your above note about trouble being “fixed” BUT – it doesn’t seem to be. I want to watch it not download it and can’t do so without even seeing a player.
It’s working for me in the latest Firefox cross-platform. Feel free to email me at [email protected] if you’re still having issues.
I plan to upgrade the player here to use some kind of project that will hopefully use a bunch of fallbacks to solve some of these issues but it’s not there yet.
Also, I’m going to bury this just because I want the comment threads here to be about the content not technical issues. (but thanks for reporting!)
Also… I decided to download the video so pressed the button. I can see the router lights flickering like crazy – so I figure that it must be downloading – I I’ve recieved absolutely NO feedback about what it’s doing. Usually there is a popup of some form asking if I want to save or run – or something. So far – if I couldn’t actually see the router lights working – I would just think the program had hung up and be exiting. Hope this can be fixed soon – the wait has been tough.
It’s saving the file to wherever your browser downloads files.
The problem with buried comments is that I keep clicking on them out of extreme curiosity over what they might say.
PS
Please bury this comment.
Rad.
I know it’s unrelated but… How are you grouping the items in your dock?
Hi Chris,
great to see you starting with one of the most important point on every redesign: content inventory.
Not a huge deal, but a button/link to the prev/next video would be helpful. Thanks for hardwork putting these together
Done.
Hey Chris, this is fantastic but I’m unable to download the video. It keeps trying to download an xml file instead of the video. Perhaps the link is wrong? Can’t wait to view more!
Oh, now its working actually soooo nevermind. Not sure if there is a way to edit comments or retract them?
Hi Chris,
Congratulations on the redesign! You did a good job.
I can’t wait to watch all the videos, however it seems I can not play them on my iPad? I see a video box with the flower logo, nothing more. I hope it isn’t flash? ;)
Kind regards.
iPad Video should be working now.
*************BUG REPORT *************
I am using IE 9 and I have no movie player showing up when page is loaded.
Hi Chris, awesome work, thanks! Quick question: is there a way to watch the live videos on mobile? I’m trying to watch the videos on my iPod Touch but every time I open the video page the Mobile Safari crashes… Any tips would be appreciated.
Hi Chris. Just wondering if I can get my account to Bear level so I have access to download the video files? My account is at Fox level at the moment.
Hey Todd,
Can you shoot me a note at [email protected]?
I’m going to bury this as I’m trying to keep the comment threads about the content of the videos.
Hi Chris. Is there a way to use something else then browser download? Could these video file be downloaded using FileZilla or something else? Thanks!
Not at the moment. Maybe in the future. Since you have commented I have added download links to the big list view, so it should be easier to click a bunch of them and get them going from one page in the browser.
I’m going to bury this just to keep the comment tread on the content rather than tech issues.
Any way the videos can be watched on iPhone/iPod Touch? So far when I watch them Safari keeps crashing every time.
The videos now work on my iPhone and iPad, after the Vimeo switch. If they don’t for you, maybe hit me up at [email protected] with more details / photos / screenshots of what’s going on.
I’m going to bury this comment so I can keep the comment thread about the actual content instead of specific technical issues.
Nice start and informative but, I guess you could copy out a sitemap to save you time right?
Late to the party here, but this is a great first start, Chris. I’m going through something similar with one of my big clients, and content strategy is definitely an important part of any site’s redesign. I’m looking forward to the rest of the videos in the series!
Intereting idea starting it with a overview of where we are… I recently changed my blog and if I had taken this strategy, maybe I wound’t be wanting to change it again..
Really good Chris! =)
This is the first video I’m watching. How do we download? I don’t see any download link.
Where’s the download link?
I have the same problem too—no download links anymore (they were there 2 months ago).
This was changed about a month ago. Downloads for Bear level members only. I left up a warning here in The Lodge for six weeks, gave another week buffer, and posted about it to the blog a few times. Still, I didn’t do the best job of making that even more clear. Sorry about that. If you have any more questions about it, hit us up at https://css-tricks.com/contact/
